How much is your health worth?

Interesting question... and according to an article in the Sept. 22, 2008 issue of TIME magazine (page 74) investing in healthy living now may add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars later in life.

Here are a couple of interesting points from the article:

-- "Most people save for retirement by focusing on their wealth. But you may accomplish more by focusing on your health. That's because the out-of-pocket costs for diseases that may be avoidable through diet and exercise can be staggering. Getting and staying fit now may be worth tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars later--a sum that just might exceed the carefully crafted stockpile in your 401(k)."

-- "Obese people spend a third more than fit people on health services and three-quarters more on medications..."

-- "Not buying cigarettes alone can add up to more than $100,000 if you stop at age 40 and invest the difference conservatively until age 65."

-- "Get moving. Exercise and diet are keys to avoiding high blood pressure and heart disease, which together have annual costs to the individual of $606, according to Nationwide's analysis. Investing that sum for 25 years may provide more than $35,000."

If you don't have a copy of TIME magazine, you can read the full article here on TIME's website.

So, how are you investing in your health??

Melissa, I truly believe in the quality of our products. I've been on Double X for years, as well as a variety of our other supplements that I've needed. I've been told, sincerely I hope :), that I look years younger than I actually am. I also, eat a fairly well balanced diet and am keeping my weight pretty close to what it was in college (which is now more than 2 decades ago!) The area I need to improve the most has been to exercise regularly. I usually get in a couple of jogs a week as well as go to my local YMCA once in awhile. But, I'm not at the 30 mins, 4 times a week that most health professionals recommend. I am truly grateful that Amway Global is not just a supplement company, but promoting a lifestyle change through the Trim Body System, and the current partnership with the YMCA.

Melissa, great article that underlines why our approach to prevention is a reasonable investment to consider... not just the savings noted by not smoking, etc. but the savings later in life due to lower incidence and severity of chronic diseases of ageing.

I question the article's assertion that the wellness industry is only $2 billion today... one wonders what categories of products and services were considered. Regardless, the article provides strong data and positioning for the PERSONALIZED HEALTH solutions we offer.

With appreciation,

This blog is written by Andy Gamm, who is a brand manager for Nutrilite at Amway Global, and also a coach, competitor, and all-around sports fan. I'm a southern girl at heart. I grew up in North Carolina (so don't be surprised if ya see a ya'll or two from me) as an Air Force brat, and I moved to Michigan when my father retired from the military. I'm a little Legally Blonde, in the sense that I adore all things pink and I'm the proud owner of two super cute lil' chihuahuas. I thought I wanted to be a doctor, but after a year of pre-med (and blacking out while observing a few surgeries) I decided I'd be better off if I focused my creative energies to the marketing/communications side of Health. I graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor's degree in Advertising/Public Relations, and a Master's degree in Communications. Over the course of my five years with Quixtar, I've worked in Public Relations, Employee Communications, and now Health Marketing. -More
